Plastic, today a widespread and yet still very new material, has two characteristics generally attributed to it: inexpensive and light. These two terms, in fact, also describe its key differences to traditional materials.
Through the injection moulding process, shaped parts can be made in large numbers that can be directly put to profitable use. Using an injection moulding machine, the relevant material / moulding compound gets plasticised in an injection unit and injected into a mould.
The mould’s cavity determines the shape and surface structure of the finished part.
Injection moulding makes economic sense for relatively large unit numbers. The cost of the mould represents a large part of the required capital expenditure.
